Mexico travel insurance & driving cover

Planning a trip south of the border? Here's what's worth covering, including the insurance most drivers forget.

Medical cover

Many U.S. health plans offer limited cover in Mexico. Private hospitals often ask for payment or a guarantee up front, so travel medical insurance with direct billing is helpful.

Driving in Mexico

Most U.S. auto policies don't provide the liability cover Mexico requires. If you drive your own car across the border, buy Mexican auto liability insurance from a Mexican-authorized insurer. Rental companies in Mexico include or sell the required liability cover.

Hurricane season

The Caribbean and Pacific coasts can be hit by storms from June to November. Buy cover early; storms already named when you buy usually aren't covered. See our hurricane guide.
