Credit card travel insurance vs. a real policy

Many travel credit cards include trip protections. They can be useful, but they rarely replace a full policy.

What cards often include

Depending on the card: trip delay reimbursement, trip cancellation and interruption, baggage delay, rental car damage cover and travel accident insurance. The trip usually has to be paid for with that card.

Common gaps

How to use both

Use your card's benefits for delays and rental cars, then buy a medical-only or comprehensive plan to fill the gaps. Call your card issuer or read your guide to benefits before you travel.
