Travel medical insurance: do you need it?

Your home health plan may not work abroad. Here's what travel medical insurance does and how much cover to look for.

Why it matters

Many U.S. health plans offer little or no cover outside the country, and U.S. Medicare generally does not cover care abroad. A hospital stay or emergency surgery overseas can cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Emergency medical vs. evacuation

How much cover

A common rule of thumb is at least $100,000 in emergency medical and $250,000 in evacuation cover for international trips, and more for remote or adventure travel. Primary cover (pays first) is easier to use than secondary cover (pays after your home insurance).

Check first

Ask your health insurer what they cover abroad, then fill the gaps. The State Department's insurance page has more background.
