The typical range
Comprehensive trip insurance commonly costs somewhere around 4% to 10% of your prepaid, non-refundable trip cost. Medical-only plans are usually much cheaper because they don't reimburse your trip cost.
What raises the price
- Age: the single biggest factor. Premiums rise noticeably after 60–65.
- Trip cost: more to reimburse means a higher premium.
- Trip length: longer trips mean more days of medical exposure.
- Upgrades: Cancel For Any Reason (CFAR), rental car damage and adventure sports add cost.
- Destination: the U.S. has very expensive healthcare, so trips there cost more to cover for non-U.S. residents.
How to pay less
Only insure the non-refundable part of your trip, compare several plans on the same trip details, consider an annual plan if you take three or more trips a year, and check what your credit card already covers.
