Bali volcanic ash & travel: a quick guide

Indonesia sits on the Ring of Fire. Ash clouds occasionally close Bali's airport (DPS) for hours or days.

What happens

When ash drifts toward flight paths, authorities may close DPS or airlines may suspend flights. Closures are often short but can strand travelers.

Insurance

Many policies cover natural-disaster delays and cancellations — again, only if bought before the eruption or ash advisory was public.

Plan B

Keep a flexible night at the start and end of your trip, and know ferry options to Lombok or Java.

Help

U.S. citizens can contact the U.S. Consular Agency in Bali — find details in our embassy finder.
