1. Rebook before you queue

Open the airline's app or call while you stand in line. Seats on the next flights go fast.

2. Know your refund rights

In the U.S., the Department of Transportation requires airlines to give a cash refund if your flight is cancelled or significantly changed and you choose not to travel. See the DOT dashboard for what each airline promises for meals and hotels.

3. Ask for meals and a hotel

If the cancellation is the airline's fault, many airlines provide vouchers. In Europe, care such as meals and a hotel is required while you wait.

4. Keep every receipt

Travel insurance trip delay benefits and credit card protections can reimburse costs the airline doesn't.

If your flight was to, from or within Europe, you may be owed up to €600 per person. See our EU261 guide.
