How to file a travel insurance claim (and get paid)

Most rejected claims fail on paperwork, not on cover. Here's how to file one properly.

During the trip

Documents to collect

Booking confirmations, proof of payment, the airline's delay or cancellation notice, medical records and itemized bills, and any refunds or credits you already received.

Filing

Submit within the deadline in your policy (often 90 days). Most insurers have an online claims portal. Keep copies of everything.

If you're denied

Ask for the reason in writing, point to the exact policy wording that supports your claim and appeal. In the U.S. you can also contact your state's insurance department.

Compare travel insurance in minutes

Estimate your price, then compare plans side by side.

Open insurance center

General information only, not insurance advice. Coverage varies by plan, state and country. Always read the policy wording before you buy.
