Which flights are covered
- Any flight departing from an EU airport, on any airline.
- Flights arriving in the EU on an EU-based airline.
The UK has a similar set of rules, often called UK261. Official details are on Your Europe.
How much
- €250 for flights up to 1,500 km
- €400 for flights of 1,500–3,500 km, and for longer flights within the EU
- €600 for flights over 3,500 km
You generally qualify when you arrive 3 or more hours late, or your flight is cancelled at short notice, and the cause was within the airline's control.

What doesn't qualify
"Extraordinary circumstances" such as severe weather, air traffic control restrictions, security risks and political unrest usually don't qualify for cash compensation. You still have the right to rerouting or a refund, and to meals and a hotel while you wait.
Missed connections
If your connecting flights were on one booking, what counts is how late you reached your final destination.
How far back can you claim?
The time limit depends on the country, and in many places it is several years. That means an old delayed flight may still be worth checking.
