Guides / Injuries, illness, delays and lost bags
Which travel insurance covers what? A situation-by-situation guide
The short answer
Different problems are paid by different parts of a policy. Injuries, illness and animal bites fall under emergency medical and evacuation. Delays, cancellations and bag problems fall under trip delay, cancellation, baggage delay and baggage loss. A medical-only plan covers the first group; a comprehensive plan covers both. Damage to a rental car needs rental car cover, which is separate.
The situation table
| What happens | Benefit that pays | Plan type | Look for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sprained ankle or wrist, broken bone | Emergency medical | Medical-only or comprehensive | $100,000+ medical, low deductible |
| Deep cut needing stitches | Emergency medical | Medical-only or comprehensive | Urgent care and ER covered |
| Dog, monkey or other animal bite | Emergency medical, evacuation | Medical-only or comprehensive | Evacuation if treatment isn't available locally |
| Car accident: your injuries | Emergency medical | Medical-only or comprehensive | No exclusion for driving; check scooter rules |
| Car accident: the rental car | Rental car damage | Comprehensive with rental add-on, or credit card | Primary cover, $35,000+ limit |
| Sick before you leave | Trip cancellation | Comprehensive | Covered reasons, pre-existing waiver |
| Sick during the trip | Emergency medical, trip interruption | Comprehensive | Interruption at 150% of trip cost |
| Flight delayed for hours | Travel delay | Comprehensive | Delay starts at 3–6 hours, daily limit |
| Missed a cruise or tour | Missed connection | Comprehensive | Missed connection, $500+ |
| Bag arrives days late | Baggage delay | Comprehensive | Starts after 6–12 hours |
| Bag lost for good | Baggage loss | Comprehensive | $1,000+, per-item limits |
| Need to cancel for no covered reason | Cancel For Any Reason | Comprehensive with CFAR | Buy within 10–21 days of first payment |
Best fit by kind of trip
Active and adventure trips. The biggest risk is injury. Prioritize emergency medical and evacuation, and check that your activities are listed. See adventure cover.
History and heritage trips. Cobblestones, ruins and long walking days mean slips and twisted ankles. Medical cover plus cancellation for pricey tours. See history and heritage travel.
Scenic road trips. Your injuries are medical; the car is separate. See road trip insurance and car accidents abroad.
Volunteer and charity trips. Check that volunteering is covered and that the kind of work you'll do isn't excluded. See volunteer travel.
Solo travelers. A strong 24/7 assistance service matters as much as limits. See solo travel insurance.
Small families. Many U.S. plans cover children free with a paying adult. See family travel insurance.
The one-line rule: if you'd be fine losing the trip cost but not paying a hospital bill, buy medical-only. If you'd be hurt by both, buy comprehensive.
Common questions
Does one plan cover everything?
A comprehensive plan covers most of it: medical, evacuation, cancellation, delays and bags. Rental car damage and CFAR are usually add-ons.
What's the most important benefit?
For trips abroad, emergency medical and evacuation. Those are the bills that can reach tens of thousands of dollars.
Do I need extra cover for lost bags if my card has it?
Maybe not. Many travel cards include baggage delay and loss cover if you paid the fare with the card. Check the limits.
