Travel insurance for small families
The short answer
Many U.S. travel insurance plans cover children free with a paying adult, so a family plan can cost little more than insuring the parents. Make sure every traveler is listed, that a child's illness is a covered reason to cancel, and that medical, delay and baggage limits are per person.
Kids-free plans
Many insurers include one or more children under a set age (often 17) at no extra cost when traveling with a covered adult. Single parents qualify too. The quote will show it.
What to check
- Every traveler is named on the policy.
- A child's illness or injury is a covered reason for cancelling the whole family's trip.
- Limits are per person, not shared across the family.
- Baggage limits cover the realistic value of family luggage: car seats, strollers and devices.
- Pre-existing conditions for any family member, including grandparents you're visiting, if their illness could cause you to cancel.
Pack for delays: a change of clothes for each child, medicine and snacks in your carry-on make a delayed bag a nuisance instead of a crisis.
Common situations
- A child gets sick two days before the trip. Trip cancellation covers the family's non-refundable costs with a doctor's note.
- A child breaks an arm at the pool. Emergency medical covers treatment; interruption can cover changing flights.
- The stroller doesn't arrive. Baggage delay covers essentials; the airline is responsible for the stroller.
Common questions
Are kids covered free on travel insurance?
On many U.S. plans, yes, when traveling with a covered adult. It depends on the insurer and the state.
Can grandparents be on the same plan?
Usually yes, though their age affects the price. It's sometimes cheaper to buy separate plans.
