Visitor insurance with pre-existing conditions

Most visitor plans exclude pre-existing conditions, but some offer limited cover. Here's how it works.

What counts as pre-existing

Usually any condition the traveler had symptoms of, was diagnosed with, or took medication for before the policy started. Each plan defines this in its wording.

Acute onset cover

Some visitor plans cover an acute onset of a pre-existing condition: a sudden, unexpected flare-up that needs urgent care. It usually has a lower limit than the main policy and an upper age limit, and it doesn't cover routine care or known, ongoing treatment.

How to compare

Look at the acute onset limit, the age limit, the deductible, and whether the plan pays a share of real bills or fixed amounts. Compare several plans side by side before buying.
